Orient of Wyoming
Ancient & Accepted Scottish
Rite
Southern Jurisdiction
The Scottish
Rite of Freemasonry is comprised of the fourth through the thirty-second degrees following the primary three degrees
of Masonry, which are the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason degrees. The Master Mason degree is
the highest degree in Masonry and the Scottish Rite degrees simply add to the knowledge that a Master Mason already
possesses. For that reason, Scottish Rite Masonry is often called the University of Freemasonry.
The Scottish
Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, includes all of the United States (including the District of Columbia), except the
Northeast 15 states (which are the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction), Japan & Korea, Panama Canal, Puerto Rico,
Okinawa & Guam, Taiwan & China, and the American Military Scottish Rite Bodies, NATO Bases.
The governing
body of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, is the Supreme Council. That body is comprised of 33 active 33rd
degree Masons, one only from each of the states in the Southern Jurisdiction, who are called Sovereign Grand Inspector
Generals, or SGIG's. Those states, and the remaining bodies, who do not have an SGIG, have a Deputy of the Supreme
Council, who is appointed by the Sovereign Grand Commander (the head of the Supreme Council) to preside in that
Scottish Rite Jurisdiction. The Deputy has all of the powers of an SGIG, except the power to vote in the Supreme
Council.
The Orient
(state) of Wyoming has three Valleys (a membership center for an area of the Orient) in Cheyenne, Lander and Sheridan.
